I started meditating when I was 5 years old, when my grandfather woke me every morning before sunrise, to sit in a lamp-lit room to meditate for 20 minutes.
At an age when I didn’t even know the word meditation, I knew I was doing something special because I could feel it through and through within my inner being.
Om was how I started meditating.
As I sat down sleepy-eyed on a prayer mat, took a deep breath, and opened my mouth wide to bring out a deep rumbling ‘Aaaaaa’ from within, it felt like mountains rumbling on faraway lands.
The sound then rounded itself into a long ‘Uuu’, almost like it’s tuning itself, before ending with an ‘Mmmmmmmm’, like a bee buzzing on my lips.
The Power of Om
Om, or Aum, is a deeply divine sound, an all-embracing sound of the universe. It is a single syllable that is the sound of harmony itself, and when we chant it, we invite that harmony within us.
It is considered to be the first sound of the universe, the life-breath of the Creator, and so chanting Om as we breathe in and out fills us with the Creation’s energy.
This is one of the easiest meditation techniques but also one of the most powerful in its simplicity. It instantly connects you to the soul of the universe.
As you continue to chant it, it vibrates, reverberates, and eventually chants itself within you as you go about your day.
You should give Om a try!
- Wherever you’re sitting right now, adjust your posture to sit up straight, and close your eyes
- Take a nice long, deep breath and let it go
- With your next deep breath, let an “Aaaaaa” slip out low and rumbly from your belly
- Keep it going as it rolls itself into an “Uuuu” sound
- When you’re half-way through your breath, slowly bring your lips together into an “Mmmmmmmmm”
- And then taper off into silence
- That’s one Om
Tip #1 – Chant Om 3 times to feel yourself in tune with your inner being. Between your Oms, observe the silence. That silence is where you’ll feel the connection with the universe.
Tip #2 – Chant Om 21 times to make it a meditation practice. The best time to do this meditation is at dawn, before night turns into day, but you can do it any time. Do this every day for 21 days and make it your go-to meditation technique.
